Gnosis Pay Shutting Down 2026: What Cardholders Must Do
- The card dies at 23:59 UTC on 20 December 2026. Physical and virtual, whether or not you act. The web app closes then too, for everything except withdrawals.
- Your money is not on a deadline; three other things are. Cashback ended 30 September, general support ends 18 June 2027, dispute support 12 June 2028. No coverage we found prints the last two.
- Gnosis Pay never issued your card. Monavate did — Monavate Ltd under FCA reference 901097, or UAB Monavate under Bank of Lithuania authorisation LB002139. Your payment rights run against Monavate.
- GBP cardholders have no route yet. EUR holders are pointed at Rebind, USD holders at Picnic or MiniPay. MiniPay runs on Celo, not Gnosis Chain, so it is a new account rather than a migration.
- Some balances have been stranded since June 2026. A security incident moved everyone to a new Safe; accounts whose funds did not move automatically still hold them in the old one, with no deadline.

The card this market pointed to as proof that self-custody works at a terminal is being switched off. Gnosis Pay is shutting down its consumer card and web app at 23:59 UTC on 20 December 2026, on a formal notice sent to cardholders on 21 September. The coverage we read got the headline and stopped: six hundred words, no tables, and not one names the company that actually issued your card. So we read the notice in full, plus every article in the wind-down section of the help centre. Here are the dates, the routes, and the two places people will lose money by doing nothing — starting with the part everyone buried: the funds have no deadline at all.
Why Gnosis Pay Is Shutting Down Its Consumer Card
This is not an insolvency, and the distinction matters, because three years of failures have trained this market to read “card is closing” as “money is gone”. Gnosis Pay is closing the consumer product and keeping the business: the notice says it moved in 2025 to “delivering card programs for wallets, fintechs and neobanks” and cannot maintain consumer interfaces alongside that.
What replaces the direct product is a set of partner apps — Rebind, Picnic, GreenCart, MiniPay, the Gnosis App and others on the partner marketplace — on a newer platform the notice credits with instant withdrawals and better card controls. Whether that helps you depends on whether a partner serves your currency, and one of the three has no partner yet.
One thing it is not: a verdict on the architecture. The Safe smart account we described in our May 2026 review did exactly what it promised when the company behind it changed direction — the opposite of the outcome this niche usually writes about.
The Dates That Actually Matter
The notice carries a key-dates table running nineteen months past the date everyone quotes. Two rows — the support cliffs in 2027 and 2028 — appear in none of the coverage we checked, and they decide whether anyone is still there when a refund goes wrong next year.
| Date (UTC) | What happens | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 21 Sep 2026 | Formal notice issued to all cardholders | Keep a copy; it is your record of the terms |
| 28 Sep 2026 | Last safe day to spend for cashback | Gnosis Pay's own advice, because of settlement lag |
| 30 Sep 2026, 23:59 | Cashback eligibility ends, across all partners | Eligibility runs on transaction date |
| 5 Oct 2026 | Transactions must have settled to count | A late 30 Sep purchase can miss the window |
| 7 Oct 2026 | Final cashback distribution | Arrives as GNO in your Safe |
| 30 Oct 2026 | Last date to ask support to verify a payout | After this nobody re-checks the arithmetic |
| 20 Dec 2026, 23:59 | Card stops; web app closes except withdrawals | Export your transaction history before this |
| 18 Jun 2027, 23:59 | Gnosis Pay general cardholder support ends | Six months of answers after the card dies |
| 12 Jun 2028, 23:59 | Support for refunds, disputes and chargebacks ends | Statutory rights against Monavate survive it |
Read that last row carefully. The notice gives disputes until June 2028 and adds that “your statutory rights against Monavate, and Monavate's complaints process, are not limited by this date” — a service commitment on top of the legal position, not a substitute for it. Most issuers never write that distinction down, which is why our guide to what you can actually dispute exists.
The Cashback Deadline Has Already Passed
If you are reading this in the last week of September 2026, the useful deadline is behind you. Eligibility ends at 23:59 UTC on 30 September across all partners, final distribution 7 October. But eligibility runs on transaction date and the transaction must settle by 5 October, and settlement takes one to three business days — so Gnosis Pay's own advice was to spend by 28 September.
That two-day gap between the advertised deadline and the real one is pure settlement lag. Three things survive it: cashback already paid stays yours and nothing distributed is reversed; the GNO sits in your Safe with nothing staked and nothing to unstake; and you have until 30 October to ask support to check a payout you think is wrong.
Gnosis Pay Is Shutting Down; Your Safe Is Not
Here is the split the whole announcement turns on. Your balance never sat on Gnosis Pay's books. It sits in a self-custodial Safe smart account on Gnosis Chain that you control with your own signer key, and the notice is unusually direct: the assets are yours, “neither Gnosis Pay nor Monavate can take them or prevent you from moving them”.
| What | After 20 Dec 2026 | Detail from the notice |
|---|---|---|
| Physical card | Stops | Cannot be reactivated; destroy through the chip and stripe |
| Virtual card | Stops | Details saved with a wallet or merchant stop authorising |
| Recurring payments | Fail | Cannot be transferred; you update each merchant yourself |
| Web app, everything else | Closes | Same moment as the card |
| Transaction history | Leaves the app | Export it first; Monavate keeps records and will supply a copy |
| Web app withdrawals | Continue | Open-source tool, maintained after the app closes |
| Your Safe and its assets | Continue | Self-custodial on Gnosis Chain; does not expire |
| EUR IBAN | Continues | Monerium's, attached to your own wallet |
| Dispute and chargeback rights | Continue | Scheme time limits still apply per transaction |
Two notes. Pending transactions are handled properly: anything authorised before cessation completes normally and unsettled holds are released under scheme rules, so a December hotel deposit does not become an orphan. But a refund arriving after deactivation cannot be applied to the card — contact Gnosis Pay and keep receipts, the same awkward mechanic we traced across nine programmes in where crypto card refunds actually go.
Who Issued the Card, and Who You Complain To
None of the news coverage names Monavate, which makes all of it useless for the question that matters when something goes wrong: who owes you anything? Gnosis Pay was the technical services provider and programme manager. The card, and the payment services under your framework contract, came from an electronic money institution.
| Who | What they are | What they owe you |
|---|---|---|
| Gnosis Pay | Technical services provider and programme manager | The app and support — to 18 Jun 2027, disputes to 12 Jun 2028 |
| Monavate Ltd | E-money institution, FCA firm reference 901097 — UK and other non-EEA | Your payment-services rights under the framework contract |
| UAB Monavate | E-money institution, Bank of Lithuania authorisation LB002139 — EEA | The same, under the EEA rules |
| Monerium | Issuer of EURe and GBPe; provider of the EUR IBAN | The IBAN and the euro off-ramp — a separate account, unaffected |
| Visa Europe | The scheme the card is issued under by licence | Chargeback rights under scheme rules, with their own time limits |
| You | Holder of the key that owns the Safe | Everything in the Safe, with no deadline and no counterparty |
The route is short. Complaints go to complaints@gnosispay.com and are passed on, or direct to Monavate, which aims for a final response within 15 business days and at the latest 35. After that, UK and other non-EEA cardholders may go free of charge to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months; EEA cardholders to the Bank of Lithuania within a year.
That is a better position than most of this market offers. The money was self-custodial, so it was never on an issuer's balance sheet, while the card sat behind a licensed e-money institution with an ombudsman attached — two protections doing two different jobs, as we set out in what actually protects a crypto card balance.
Where Cardholders Can Move, by Currency
Your options are not a matter of preference. They are set by your card's currency and the app you use today, and Gnosis Pay names a partner for each case — except one.
| You hold | Route named | New ID checks | What carries over |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR card, web app | Rebind | None | Account, IBAN and card; a migration flow built for Gnosis Pay users |
| USD card, in Brazil | Picnic | None | Nothing about the card changes at this step |
| USD card, elsewhere | MiniPay | New account | Nothing — MiniPay runs on Celo, not Gnosis Chain |
| GBP card | None published yet | — | “Actively working on a solution… in the coming weeks” |
| Zeal user | As above; Zeal's card services also stop by 20 Dec | Per partner | Rebind's tool moves assets on Gnosis and Base automatically |
| Already on Rebind, Picnic, GreenCart, MiniPay or the Gnosis App | Nothing to do | — | Your app invites you across and issues its own card |
Read the MiniPay row twice. Because MiniPay runs on Celo rather than Gnosis Chain, existing details cannot carry over: a new account, your old Safe left where it is. That is a migration in name only, so a USD cardholder outside Brazil is starting again, and should compare the market rather than accept a default.
The notice is blunt about something the partner pages are not: joining a partner is not a continuation of your arrangement. It is a new framework contract with Monavate under new terms — its own eligibility rules, currencies, chains, FX, limits, fees and rewards — and the flow asks you to confirm deactivation of your Gnosis Pay card and termination of the old agreement. You also deploy and fund a new Safe.
How to Withdraw, and the Step That Strands People
While the web app runs there is an easy route: log in, open Send Funds, move the money like any other transfer. After 20 December the direct withdrawal page is the only route, and its requirements are easy to get wrong in a hurry: the wallet (an EOA) that owns the Safe, a destination address on Gnosis Chain whose keys you hold — not an exchange deposit address — and xDAI for gas in the signing wallet, not in the Safe.
The withdrawal runs as two transactions with a delay between them, a built-in security feature of the Safe rather than a fault. That is where people get stuck, and Gnosis Pay names the failure itself: send away all your xDAI in the first transaction and you cannot pay for the second. If you have none at all, the official Gnosis Chain faucet supplies a small amount free.
| Token in the Safe | What it is | Why it gets left behind |
|---|---|---|
| EURe, GBPe or USDCe | Your spending balance. EURe and GBPe from Monerium; USDCe is bridged USDC | It does not — this is the one people remember |
| GNO | Cashback holdings; nothing staked, nothing to unstake | Not spendable, so it never appears in the spending view |
| xDAI | Gas for the two withdrawal transactions | Send it all in step one and step two cannot run |
| Unsupported tokens | Anything the card programme never supported | Needs the separate recover-funds-sent-by-mistake route |
| The OG NFT | Commemorative early-cardholder token | Soulbound — it cannot be moved at all |
Getting to a bank account is a separate two-stage move, and this is where the architecture is least intuitive. Your IBAN is attached to your own wallet, not the Card Safe: money going out must leave the Safe first, then go to the bank from your wallet through Monerium. That Monerium account already exists, created under the same email address even if you have never signed in.
The Legacy Safe From the June 2026 Incident
This is the fact no coverage of the shutdown mentions, and the one most likely to be worth money to somebody reading it. In June 2026, after a security incident, Gnosis Pay migrated every cardholder to a new card Safe. Most balances moved automatically. Some did not, and those accounts were left with funds in the old Safe to be moved by hand — which, months later, some people never did.
If that is you, the help centre says the funds are still there and still yours, checkable on the legacy withdrawal page by connecting the wallet that owns the Safe. There is no deadline. The procedure matches the ordinary withdrawal — xDAI for gas, a Gnosis Chain destination you control, a queued transaction you execute when the timer finishes — with a custom-token toggle for anything that is not EURe.
What Happens If You Do Nothing
Doing nothing is legitimate and Gnosis Pay says so plainly: nothing you ignore costs you your funds. The money stays in the Safe, is not transferred, frozen or reclaimed, and the company states it cannot seize it. The card stops on 20 December and recurring payments fail. You can join a partner later as an ordinary new customer.
Two things still deserve doing. The first cannot be fixed afterwards: check you can still open the wallet that owns your Safe, and that its recovery phrase is stored safely. If that wallet is lost, nobody — not Gnosis Pay, not Monavate, no support ticket — can recover the funds. The second is adding a second owner wallet while the web app makes it a three-minute job rather than an on-chain one; a real trade-off, because any owner has full control.
And if you have a EUR IBAN, deal with what pays into it. Salary and standing orders keep arriving in your own wallet long after the card stops — money accumulating somewhere you have stopped looking.
What This Says About Self-Custodial Cards
It is tempting to file this under “another crypto card dies”, and that gets the lesson backwards. The card failed exactly the way a custodial card fails: a commercial decision upstream, a date you did not choose, subscriptions to rebuild, new terms to keep spending. The money did not fail at all — no administrator, no shortfall, no claims process, no queue. It sat in an account the closing company could not reach, behind an open-source withdrawal tool that outlives the app.
That is the trade laid bare. Self-custody removes counterparty risk on the balance and none of the platform risk on the card, because a card is a licensed payment product and always will be. Anyone choosing a self-custodial or Web3 card on “not your keys, not your coins” should read 20 December as the priced-in cost: your keys protect the asset, not the service.
The duller lesson: cashback was the first thing switched off here, on nine days' notice, while the issuer, the ombudsman route and the custody model still meant something in December — an ordering that holds for every card on our comparison table.
The Playbook, and the Final Take
Seven things, in the order they stop being possible. The first four are worth doing whether or not you intend to move.
| # | Do this | By when, and why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm you can open the wallet that owns your Safe | Now — the only item that cannot be fixed later |
| 2 | Check the legacy withdrawal page for a stranded balance | Any time — nobody will remind you it is there |
| 3 | Query any cashback you think is wrong | 30 Oct 2026 — the last date support will check it |
| 4 | List every subscription billed to the card | Before 20 Dec — they fail silently, one merchant at a time |
| 5 | Export transaction history; note the last four digits and expiry | Before 20 Dec — needed for any later dispute |
| 6 | Choose: move to a partner, or withdraw and stop | Before 20 Dec if you want a card without a gap |
| 7 | Keep enough xDAI for two transactions | Whenever you withdraw — the commonest way it gets stuck |
The final take is calmer than the headlines. A card many treated as the proof-of-concept for onchain spending is being retired by a company that decided its future is wholesale rather than retail, on three months' notice for the card and nineteen for the support behind it. Euro holders have a near-painless move; dollar holders outside Brazil are opening a new account on a different chain and should shop around; sterling holders are waiting on a page that says “in the coming weeks”. In every case the funds are not the thing at risk. They never were — and on a market where that sentence is usually wishful thinking, this time it is in the notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gnosis Pay shutting down completely?
The consumer side is closing, not the company. The notice of 21 September 2026 ends the direct-to-consumer card and the web app at 23:59 UTC on 20 December 2026, while Gnosis Pay continues as a card programme provider for partner apps including Rebind, Picnic, GreenCart, MiniPay and the Gnosis App.
When exactly does the Gnosis Pay card stop working?
23:59 UTC on 20 December 2026. Both the physical card and any virtual card cease to function then, no transaction of any kind can be authorised afterwards, and this applies whether or not you act. The web app closes at the same instant for everything except withdrawals.
Will I lose my money when Gnosis Pay shuts down?
No. The balance sits in a self-custodial Safe on Gnosis Chain, and the notice states that neither Gnosis Pay nor Monavate can take those assets or prevent you moving them. The withdrawal page is maintained after the app closes, with no deadline. The one way to lose the money is to lose the wallet that owns the Safe.
Do I have to move to a partner app?
No. Gnosis Pay says moving is optional. Doing nothing costs you the card, not the funds: it stops on 20 December either way, while your Safe and your ability to withdraw are unaffected. Moving is simply the only route that keeps a working card, and it creates a new contract.
What happens to my Gnosis Pay GNO cashback?
The programme ended at 23:59 UTC on 30 September 2026, with the final distribution on 7 October. Eligibility went by transaction date, but a transaction also had to settle by 5 October — which is why Gnosis Pay advised spending by 28 September. Cashback already paid stays yours and the GNO sits unstaked in your Safe.
Does my Gnosis Pay EUR IBAN stop working?
No, because it was never Gnosis Pay's. IBANs exist on EUR cards only and come from Monerium, which created you an account under the same email address. The IBAN is attached to your own wallet rather than the Card Safe, so transfers keep arriving there as EURe after the card dies.
Who do I complain to now that Gnosis Pay is closing?
Monavate, the licensed issuer. UK and other non-EEA cardholders contract with Monavate Ltd, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference 901097; EEA cardholders with UAB Monavate, authorised by the Bank of Lithuania under code LB002139. Monavate aims to respond finally within 15 business days, at the latest 35, after which the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Bank of Lithuania takes over free of charge.
Is there a deadline to withdraw from my Gnosis Pay Safe?
No. Gnosis Pay states that the Safe is yours, does not expire and does not depend on Gnosis Pay existing, and that the withdrawal page stays open after the web app closes. The easy route does have a deadline: until 20 December you can withdraw through Send Funds, and after that the direct page needs the owner wallet and xDAI for two transactions.
